This is a nice Renaissance silver finger ring, dating to the 16th century A.D. The bezel is set with a yellow quartz gemstone, likely a period replacement for a rock crystal or glass gem. The quartz is of an irregular (natural) shape, set into a raised square shaped bezel. Such gems were often worn for their protective qualities, ascribed to the gems in lapidaries as 'protective' or 'lucky'. The bezel on this ring is engraved with a geometric design, although this is rather worn and obscured through corrosion. It is a nice excavated ring originally found in Italy, part of an old European collection.
