This is a nice Spanish gold Escudo of Charles and Joanna, minted between 1535 - 1555 A.D. It is a good example of a hammered gold coin, likely struck from the plundered gold of the Aztecs! The first Escudo (Shield) was struck in gold from the 'New World', brought back by the Conquistadors and Treasure Fleets.

Reverse: Cross of Jerusalem within quatrefoil with inverted leaf terminals.
