This is wonderful medieval English gold Angel, minted in London between 1471 - 1483. It was struck at the Tower of London during the reign of King Edward IV (Second Reign) during the Wars of the Roses. This coin bears the Mintmark of a heraldic cinquefoil giving us a more precise date of 1480 - 1483.
Obverse: EDWARD’x DEI GRA’x REX A n GL’x Z FRAnC, (Edward by the grace of God, King of England France) St Michael killing the dragon with a lance, one foot on the dragon, beaded circle surrounding, initial mark heraldic cinquefoil
Reverse: PER CRVCEM TVA’ SALVA n OS XPC’ REDEMPT ("By Thy cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer ) ship sailing right, quartered shield upon hull, cross above, E to left, rose to right.
One small rim split, dig between Angel legs, otherwise very fine, lightly toned.
