Medieval Armorial Stud of Sir Gilbert Pecche

£185.00 Approx $230.39, €215.37

Code: 10811

This is a nice medieval heraldic harness or livery stud, dating to the 13th - 14th century A.D. It is enamelled with the armorial of the Sir Gilbert Pecche (argent, a fess between two chevrons gules) or Sir John Peche. The surfaces would have originally been silvered (this however has worn off as usual for gilt silver on copper-alloy) leaving just the red enamel, intact though chipped in places. It is of an unusual shape for a heraldic stud, being of a round rather than shield-shaped. The round shape either worked better on a leather belt, or possibly it was designed to be inserted into a pommel? The round shape and red chevrons do give the piece a 'Spartan' look!

A rare and interesting item in good excavated condition.
