Heavy Gold Middle Bronze Age Flange Twisted Torc Hack

SOLD

Code: 10833

This is a rare and heavy (19.25 grams) piece of Middle Bronze Age gold bullion hack, dating to 1300 - 1150 B.C. This would have originally formed part of a very impressive gold torc (neck torque) of a flange-twisted type (see NMS-5E3BC2 and CAM-E5D871 for similar examples). At some stage the torc was chopped into bullion, the cut marks are very clear and evident, this was either a ritual act of sacrifice (of the object) or to convert the item into a more convenient form of payment. These torcs are often found damaged and purposefully chopped up like this piece (see DOR-324B57HAMP-C8DC02DOR-FACB19 for comparisons and further research can be found in the British Museum Collection
