Silver Penny of King Cnut Moneyer Morulf of Stamford

SOLD

Code: 10855

This is a Saxon silver penny of King Cnut,  minted at Stamford by the moneyer Morolf. It is of the short cross type, MORVLF ON STAN. A nice example on a full round flan with a clear portrait. This moneyer is known only for this mint and reign. Interestingly Stamford Bridge was the site of a great battle in 1066, where King Harold Godwinson defeated King Harald Hardrada in the last great Saxon victory, this would have been within a generation of this coin being struck.
