Georgian Tassie amber glass intaglio of a Bacchanalian party

SOLD

Code: 10891

This is a wonderful Georgian classical intaglio, dating to the 18th or early 19th century. It is molded from a golden amber glass, with a lively scene of the gods having a party. In this scene, we can see Pan seated on a rock playing his pipes, besides him sits the panther of Dionysus. At the centre of the scene is a goddess or maenad dancing, spinning with ribbons and tambourine. In front of the maenad is a small figure of Eros, clashing together a pair of cymbals. All this dancing takes place outside, next to a tree and pedestal or altar, lying on the ground is a thrysus, the wand of Dionysus.

It is an excellent example in great condition, originally this would have been set into a brooch or pendant.
