This is an excavated medieval gold finger ring, dating to the 13th - 15th century. It has an unusual cupped setting displaying a garnet gemstone, sadly it has a chip or would easily have passed for a ruby. Such red and pink gemstones were popular in Western Europe from the 14th century as the fashions for sapphires declined. The size of this ring would suggest it once belonged to a lady of elegance, likely gifted as a token of love. Today the ring has survived to us intact, though a little scuffed from its time rolling around in a field!
