This is a Saxon silver penny of King Æthelred II, minted at Chester by the moneyer Elfstan (+ELFSTAN.MO.LEGF). It is a full round coin, well struck but displaying plenty of wear with added peck marks from circulation within Viking held territory. This coin would have at one time been paid out as tribute or Danegeld to the Vikings, since it had travelled as far as Estonia (by Longboat) where it was found by a metal detectorist. A good historic coin with a few stories to tell!
