Anglo-Scandinavian or Viking-period penannular silver finger-ring

£390.00 Approx $485.68, €454.02

Code: 11007

This is a substantial Anglo-Scandinavian silver finger ring, dating to the 9th - 11th century A.D. The ring is of a penannular shape of a round band smoothly tapered from the widest point at the front to blunt points at the rear of the hoop. There are hammer marks on the internal surface. Such rings were made to be resizeable by adjusting the terminals and even knotting them on occasion. Examples in gold have been recorded from Gainsborough DENO-F22E58, a silver example from Runhall NMS-E26C94 and a copper example from Stradsett in Norfolk NMS-B77D77.

This is an excellent example in good excavated condition, likely once part of a treasure hoard as the surface is slightly pitted as with hoard silver/metalwork.
