Ancient Roman silver intaglio ring of a red squirrel

This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 2nd century A.D. The ring is set with the original carnelian intaglio depicting a sitting red squirrel. The gemstone is tightly set in a rubbed over mount, although has some wear it is still in good condition. A red squirrel is a nice subject for an intaglio and one I haven't come across before!
