Renaissance enamelled bronze Veneras Eucharist

SOLD

Code: 11126

This is a superb Renaissance/Tudor period enameled Veneras, dating to the 16th - 17th centuries. The frame is of the type used to house early portrait miniatures of King Henry VIII (see the last photograph in the Fitzwilliam Museum- dated 1525 - 1527). This example uses the same blue, black and white enamel. The front is empty where a parchment or vellum image would have once been housed, the back displays two cherubs bearing the Eucharist, all set within enamel. Such frames were also used to contain reliquaries and embroideries as well as devotional images. A nice historic piece, intact with most of the original enamel.
