Tudor silver armorial seal matrice Dudley

SOLD

Code: 11165

This is a Tudor silver armorial seal, dating to the early 16th - 17th century. It is deeply cut with a set of arms that I read as 'Chequy, a bend of ermine Impaling a chevron between three eagle heads erased. In centre chief point a crescent'. The first set of arms relates to the Earl of Dudley with the second set relating to a marriage (as yet unresearched). The body of the seal has an openwork trefoil handle, similar to one recorded from Fernhurst (HAMP-3C7AC4) and Barham (SF-B0199D) dated to the post-medieval period. A rare object from an old collection.
