Tudor silver-gilt aiglet lace-tag

This is a wonderful Tudor silver-gilt aiglet, dating to the 16th century A.D. It is a handsome piece worn as a 'lace-tag' (sewn on to rich brocaded fabrics). This example is decorated with alternating panels, one plain the other decorated. The majority of aiglets are made from pewter, bronze and occasionally silver. Examples in gold have been recorded (BUC-E33633) it is thought these were worn in hats or court regalia in the presence of the king or queen. Similar shaped aiglets appear on the clothing of Mary Nevill and her son Gregory Fiennes by Hans Eworth, 1559. This is a nice example in excellent condition. Form an old Yorkshire collection acquired in the late 1970's.
