This is a fabulous medieval bronze purse frame, dating to the 14th - 15th century A.D. The bar is inscribed with the Latin words 'O MATER / DEI MEM // ENTO ME / I AMEN' (meaning 'Mother of God remember me Amen'). It has a central shield shaped boss inscribed 'ihs' / 'M' Maria monogram with niello inlay. Some of the niello is still present. This type of purse frame is classed as a London Museum Type A2 (further example can be seen in the Museum of London A27396). It is intact with the original suspension loop that still swivels, although the terminals are missing and it has a bend to the bar. A nice example with a good dark patina
