Stuart armorial seal with a portrait of King Charles I

SOLD

Code: 11281

This is an interesting Stuart period armorial fob seal, dating to the late 17th to early 18th century. The swivel fob bears three faces, one left plain for a later engraved seal, the first face cut with an armorial device, the second is cut with a portrait of King Charles Ist, wearing a lace collar and sash, this is very competent and skillfully rendered. Around the portrait is an inscription as yet undeciphered. It is a great looking seal that may have belonged to a Royalist or Jacobite family. The seal is a bit rubbed, being of steel and not silver is susceptible to wear through harsh cleaning over the centuries!
