This is a large late medieval signet ring, dating to the 15th - 16th century. The device is of a series of geometric symbols based around a '4' used as a merchants mark for sealing. A similar example has been recorded from Carlisle LANCUM-85944C. This ring would at one time been fully mercurial gold-gilded to appear to be made from solid gold. A large wearable ring (that may have once been worn over a glove). The ring is in excavated condition and with traces of the original gilding
