Scandinavian Viking gold finger ring punched decoration

SOLD

Code: 11484

A rare Viking gold finger ring dating from the late 9th-10th century. It is made from a strip of gold which tapers to wire terminals that are wound around and fused to the outer edge of the hoop. The outer surface of the strip is decorated with punched triangles (cut with transverse grooves as opposed to the more common triple pellets design). The strip tapers into a thin twisted wire, each then fused into a round ring and the wire wrapped around the outer body - very intricate and skilled work. The ring has clearly been worn and used as it displays some heavy wear. This ring is all 100% genuine and untouched from burial. See also SWYOR-56EA98DENO-9A6C17, and ESS-B07604 for further comparison and discussion.

The condition is good for an excavated ring, a nice example that is suitable to be worn again today!
