British Bronze Age side looped and socketed spearhead/javelin

SOLD

Code: 11521

A side looped and socketed javelin head of Middle Bronze Age date (1500 - 1150 BC). It has a short socket and a leaf-shaped blade. Either side of the socket is two cast integral loops, used to bind with sinews to a wooden shaft. It is a nice example, intact with a good English green patina. Similar examples can be found in Ehrenberg (1977, 38, no. 57) as Class IV dated to the Middle Bronze Age. They are believed to have developed in the Acton Park phase and continue into the Late Bronze Age. This corresponds roughly with Needham's Period 5 (c. 1500 - 1150 BC). See also DOR-1F4D7CWILT-B7296D and ESS-A7B5E4 for similar recorded examples.
