This is an ancient Roman hardstone cameo of an Imperial Eagle, dating to the 1st - 2nd century A.D. The gem is nicely cut on two-layer agate, with the background a pale translucent grey. The eagle is cut on the white layer, which contrasts with the background. The size of this gem would indicate it was originally set into a pendant or finger ring. The eagle was sacred to the god Jupiter, used as a prominent symbol of Rome and her Legions.
This is a very competent and well-sculpted ancient gem in excellent condition.
