This is a nice late medieval gold finger ring, dating to the 15th - 16th century. It is set with the original garnet gemstone, enclosed within a cusped setting. The garnet is point cut and polished in the manner of a period diamond, it is without chips and cracks, and is of a lovely colour. During the medieval period, it was widely believed that gemstones had powers that could affect the wearer. At the time it was believed that garnet could cure depression and relieve diseases of the liver! This is a wonderful example in excellent condition.
