British Iron Age Celtic Terret Ring Horse Harness Fitting

This is an ancient late Iron Age/Roman bronze terret ring, dating to the 1st century AD. The ring has a "saddle" type attachment bar set between two circular stops. Around the outer edge of the ring are 3 rounded knobs. Spratling (1972) identifies this as a Knobbed Terret (Group IX, sub-group A) dating from the late 1st century to early 2nd century AD. It is cast in one piece from bronze. It was used for securing a leather harness for a horse or chariot. This was originally found in the Midlands. See also WREX-06D00D, for a further example.
