This is an impressive antique Renaissance silver pectoral crucifix pendant, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Such a crucifix was designed to be worn on a long chain around the neck (so that it rests on the chest) worn especially by bishops, abbots, and priests. This example displays some wear although is intact and in excellent condition. The body is decorated with shell inlay around an olive wood cross. The corpus is made from silver, attached to the cross with tiny silver nails. The back of the cross is engraved with a heart and wriggle work decoration.
