This is a very rare medieval bronze seal, dating to the late 13th - 14th century. The design is deeply cut, giving a crisp impression with a full and clear inscription. The owner of the seal is named in Lombardic lettering as "S ' DAMOISELLE 'Y' DAME DE COURCELLES " Seal Damoiselle Y Dame of Courcelles. The device depicts the Lady of Courcelles walking in a garden whilst reading a book, this demonstrates her education and position in society, her name begins with a 'Y' so should be researchable. Sadly the handle is broken, but one rarely finds seals as good as this of a noblewoman.
