Renaissance silver-gilt aiglet lace-tag

SOLD

Code: 12026

This is a wonderful Tudor silver-gilt aiglet, dating to the late 15th - 16th century AD. It is a handsome piece worn as a 'lace-tag' (sewn onto rich brocaded fabrics). This example is decorated with a ropetwist design. The majority of aiglets are made from pewter, bronze and occasionally silver. Similar shaped aiglets appear on the clothing of Mary Nevill and her son Gregory Fiennes by Hans Eworth, 1559. Further examples and history of aiglets can be found in "Aiglets Medieval Post Medieval and Modern" by Gerald A. Livings.

This is a nice example in excellent condition.
