1676 Charles II Silver Crown

SOLD

Code: 12470

This is a milled silver crown of King Charles II, struck in 1676. The obverse features the third laureate bust of Charles II, facing right. The reverse shows crowned cruciform shields around a central garter star, the shields representing England, Ireland, France and Scotland. Interlinked Cs in the angles of the shields. Edge lettering includes ‘ANNO REGNI VICESIMO OCTAVO DECUS ET TUTAMEN’ for the regnal year. Charles’ regnal years are dated from 1649 rather than 1660 when he was restored to the throne. This coin is a good collectable example with a nice old golden cabinet tone.
